I don’t even know if tv is any good anymore

Remember Ally McBeal?

Allow me to date myself: when I last was actually into/ able to watch television with any regularity, it was Ally McBeal. Star Trek: The Next Generation. A whole bunch of British comedies of varying vintages airing on PBS, from Are You Being Served? to Chef! to Absolutely Fabulous.

But, current, water cooler discussion worthy tv? Not since the then-shocking co-ed bathrooms of Ally McBeal.

Oh sure, I tried to keep track of Grey’s Anatomy. I know I missed out on The Good Wife and Weeds. I watched Dead Like Me and Burn Notice in marathons only and that’s the only way I get to see The Big Bang Theory. The only shows I watch in [mostly] real-time are The Daily Show and The Colbert Report.

My only contributions at the Canadian water cooler are snippets of American satire news. I don’t even adequately keep up on my Rick Mercer rants or Strombo updates.

But, aside from those last two, I have a hard time convincing myself that I’m missing out on anything water cooler-critical. “Reality” tv? I can’t sit through an entire episode of backstabbing and mocking. The occasional Fringe or Once Upon A Time aside, where does anyone find the time to watch serial shows? And where are the serials of any worth?

Yes, I realise I am sounding old and cranky – tv these days! – and should probably just go set up in a rocking chair on the front porch with a coon dog and a shotgun good book.

Or a pair of binoculars to spy on some real housewives.

I hear they’re a lively bunch.

  1. I don’t have much I like on tv any more either. But for me, Parenthood is can’t miss. The writing and acting are so very good. Then I like Parks and Rec and Community. Beth introduced me to Mad Men on dvds and I have spent the past 4 weekend watching Seasons 1-4
while my husband watches football. I need to watch Season 5 and then when the new season begins, I will be ready to watch that. Again, the writing and acting are good. I wish so called reality tv would just disappear.

  2. Hi! Good to see you again. đŸ™‚ I’ve caught bits of Community and it looks like something I should be watching – I will add it to my marathon days for the next time I am at home with a cold. Thx!
