Remember Ally McBeal?
Allow me to date myself: when I last was actually into/ able to watch television with any regularity, it was Ally McBeal. Star Trek: The Next Generation. A whole bunch of British comedies of varying vintages airing on PBS, from Are You Being Served? to Chef! to Absolutely Fabulous.
But, current, water cooler discussion worthy tv? Not since the then-shocking co-ed bathrooms of Ally McBeal.
Oh sure, I tried to keep track of Grey’s Anatomy. I know I missed out on The Good Wife and Weeds. I watched Dead Like Me and Burn Notice in marathons only and that’s the only way I get to see The Big Bang Theory. The only shows I watch in [mostly] real-time are The Daily Show and The Colbert Report.
But, aside from those last two, I have a hard time convincing myself that I’m missing out on anything water cooler-critical. “Reality” tv? I can’t sit through an entire episode of backstabbing and mocking. The occasional Fringe or Once Upon A Time aside, where does anyone find the time to watch serial shows? And where are the serials of any worth?
Yes, I realise I am sounding old and cranky – tv these days! – and should probably just go set up in a rocking chair on the front porch with a coon dog and a
shotgun good book.
Or a pair of binoculars to spy on some real housewives.
I hear they’re a lively bunch.
